Guatavita Lagoon & Sacred Heritage

The lake that started the legend of El Dorado. A full day from Bogotá through Muisca territory, colonial streets and one of Colombia's most sacred natural sites.

Overview

Guatavita is where the legend of El Dorado begins. Long before the Spanish arrived, the Muisca people performed ritual ceremonies at this sacred lake, offering gold to the water and giving birth to one of history's most enduring myths. The lake itself has barely changed since.

About two hours from Bogotá through the Andean highlands. A full day that covers the lagoon, the colonial town and an optional stop at the Upside Down House.

About the destination

The lagoon sits at 3,000 meters above sea level, hidden inside a nature reserve accessible only on foot. The trail to the water takes about 45 minutes through Andean forest, with the lake appearing suddenly at the end — perfectly circular, deep green, and completely still. A park guide leads the walk and explains the Muisca rituals that took place here for centuries.

Back in town, Guatavita La Nueva is one of those places that feels untouched. White walls, terracotta rooftops, cobblestone streets and a main plaza quiet enough to actually sit in. Good for lunch, artisan shopping, or simply walking without a map.

The Upside Down House is five minutes from the town center. A two-story building constructed entirely inverted, furniture, stairs and rooms all flipped. Most people spend more time there than they planned.
