La Chorrera Waterfall

Colombia's tallest waterfall, deep in the Andean forest outside Bogotá. A morning hike through cloud forest, two waterfalls and mountain views.

Overview

La Chorrera is Colombia's tallest waterfall at 590 meters, located in the Andean cloud forest outside Choachí, about an hour from Bogotá. The hike to the base passes through dense forest, crossing streams and climbing through terrain that changes noticeably as you gain altitude.

Along the way, El Chiflón is the first waterfall on the route, smaller, closer and accessible enough to stand next to. La Chorrera appears further up the trail, falling 590 meters through the jungle in tiers. The kind of waterfall that makes you stop walking.

About the destination

The trail starts at Parque Aventura La Chorrera, where the route is marked and entrance fees are paid. From there, the path crosses farmland before entering the cloud forest. The vegetation changes quickly once you are inside — oak trees, moss-covered rocks and crystal-clear streams running alongside the path.

El Chiflón comes first. The water falls close enough to feel the spray, and a poncho is included with the entrance fee for good reason. From there the trail continues upward, steeper and rockier, until La Chorrera appears through the trees. At 590 meters it is the tallest waterfall in Colombia, falling in stages through the jungle. You hear it before you see it.

After the hike, the town of Choachí is a natural stop on the way back. A small Andean town with thermal pools, local food and enough calm to decompress before the drive back to Bogotá.
