Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral

Built by miners, visited by millions. The Salt Cathedral sits 200 meters underground and remains one of South America's most unexpected architectural achievements.

Overview

The Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is Colombia's most visited landmark. A full cathedral carved 180 meters underground inside a real salt mine, built over decades by the miners who worked it. Few places in South America surprise visitors quite the way this one does

About the destination

Inside the mine, the route follows the Way of the Cross - fourteen stations carved in salt rock that lead you deeper underground. At the bottom, the space opens into the main cathedral, anchored by a 16-meter salt cross and a ceiling high enough to surprise anyone who walks in. The lighting was designed to bring out the textures of the salt walls, and there is a museum inside that traces the history of the mine and the people who built it.

After the visit, lunch is served at a local restaurant before exploring Zipaquirá's colonial center. Cobblestone streets, artisan shops and a main square that time has largely left alone.

Zipaquirá is about an hour from Bogotá through the Andean savanna. A full day out, at your own pace.

Colombia produces the finest emeralds in the world, and Zipaquirá's certified workshops are some of the best places to buy them. As a special addition to your private salt cathedral tour, we can take you to the most trusted, certified jewelry workshops in the colonial town of Zipaquira.

  • Certified Quality: Every dealer we visit is licensed and provides official gemstone certification. No guesswork, no risk.

  • Direct Prices: Stones here cost significantly less than in Bogotá's tourist districts, without compromising on quality.

  • No Extra Transport Fee: This shopping stop is optional and fully included in your private tour itinerary at no additional cost.
